"Soft Exterior" is an innovative art project that challenges traditional notions of masculinity through the creation of a denim durag adorned with individually handcrafted denim roses.

This unique juxtaposition of rugged denim material with delicate floral elements serves as a commentary on the complexities of modern masculinity.

Contest finalist in Upcycle Challenge for Durag Festival CLT 2023.

Throughout American history, particularly within the African American community, men have been compelled, often by external forces such as slavery and systemic racism, to suppress any indications of vulnerability as a means of survival.

This artwork serves as a tribute to the contemporary man, who endeavors to explore the possibility of achieving a harmonious equilibrium between strength and vulnerability. It questions whether such a balance is attainable and, if so, what internal transformations are necessary to attain it.

As viewers engage with the artwork, they are encouraged to reflect on their own perceptions of masculinity and consider the challenges faced by individuals learning to acknowledge, regulate, and express emotions, as well as to navigate interpersonal relationships with wisdom and empathy, which has frequently been regarded as a luxury beyond the reach for many.

"Soft Exterior" serves as a platform for dialogue, inviting audiences to explore themes of strength, vulnerability, and identity in the modern world.

It advocates for the essential role of emotional intelligence not only in personal development but also in the progression of future generations.
